"This paper... demonstrates that during the large scale Latter-day Saint exodus from Nauvoo, despite popular stories and paintings to the contrary, hardly anyone began their trek west by moving out of Nauvoo on an ice bridge.... This paper provides a detailed weather history for February 1846, showing that when the exodus started on 4 February, the weather was mild, and a flotilla of ferryboats moved hundreds of people across the river, day by day."
