"I am persuaded that the transformation that culminated in the adoption of our new name came about due to two principal forces. First, our ever growing association with teh ecumenical community, particularly at St. Paul School of Theology, eroded the paradigm of apostasy and restoration that had caused us to attempt to remain allof from developments in the broader Christian world. Second, the international expansion of the church into cultures vastly different from the context in America north of the Rio Grande exposed the provincial dimensions of some of our most chrished convictions. Below I will suggest that those two factors might help sketch the trajectories for future historical investigations in the Community of Christ. I will also address a third issue. In his own interpretation of the discursive shifts President Grant McMurray has spoke of a move from having a prophet to being a prophetic people. I contend that this notion also has significant historiographical implications. I would like to address these three points in reverse order as concentric circles that move us ever further away from the dominant trends in previous historical investigations." [AUTHOR]
