"The Strangite movement suffered a devastating blow with the death of James J. Strang. Widely scattered after the expulsion from Beaver Island, many were disillusioned and left Mormonism or became inactive; but others retained their belief in Joseph Smith Jr. and James Strang as prophets. The chief reason the Strangite church survived was Wingfield Watson, who grappled for sixty years with apostates, itas, and isms--primarily the RLDS, a particular threat to his family as well as his church, considering the appeal of Smith’s son as prophet and the missionary zeal of former Strangites."
