"I will discuss three episodes of conspiracy in the Reorganized church's past. The first goes back to the very earliest years of the church and is played out during the life of the founding prophet. It deals with the sense of relentless and unjust persecution felt by the church as part of an overarching conspiracy to destroy the movement and all for which it stood. Second, I will discuss the rhetoric of conspiracy on the part of Reorganization leaders and members in the latter nineteenth century over the perceived conspiracy of the Utah brand of Mormonism to subvert the ideals of the restoration into a grotesque image of self-aggrandizement. Finally, I will discuss the conspiracy thesis leveled by conservation Reorganization members in the recent past against the leadership of the church to sell its goals, ideals, and doctrines "down the river" and to remake the church into a Protestant denomination. In each case, those arguing on behalf of conspiracy theories thought they stood at the barricades of the gospel, preserving it from destruction at the hands of a corrupt, powerful, and manipulative enemy."
