"My essay describes, analyzes, and interprets relations between the Cutlerites and JOsephites in Iowa from 1855 to 1865. Today the religious issues over which they so bitterly disagreed seem quite small. In spite of fundamental similarities, consequential differences are discernible. More importantly, the Cutlerites and Josephites symbolically construed their sometimes subtle antagonisms as monumental. Yet, the most significant division between them pertains to the manner in which they envisioned their connections with early Mormonism. The Cutlerites saw themselves as continuous with Nauvoo Mormonism. In spite of doctrinal modfications and a unique interpretation of tradition, they were committed to a Nauvoo image of the Kingdom of God. The Josephites substnatially rejected Nayvoo Mormonism and its ambitious political kingdom, drawing on a novel of an earlier period." [AUTHOR]
