"Taqiyya means “caution” or “fear.” The most common word used to describe
taqiyya is “dissimulation.” There are several different types of taqiyya and
several definitions. There are also different reasons given by Muslims for when the use of taqiyya is justified. For the purposes of this discussion I will mainly focus on two types of taqiyya, but I will also discuss some extensions of these two types. One type justifies deception in order to conceal one’s true beliefs or to violate Islamic law in order to be protected from danger. The other type is to protect secret knowledge and doctrines. Scholar Etan Kohlberg identifies the first as “prudential taqiyya” and the second as “non-prudential taqiyya.” Both types are generally used in order to protect oneself from possible harm.
I will first give some background to the beginnings of taqiyya in Shi’ite Islam.
Then I will discuss prudential taqiyya along with some extensions of the
concept beyond just protecting oneself from harm. I will demonstrate how
Mormonism has utilized a very similar principle since its commencement. I
will then discuss non-prudential taqiyya and demonstrate that Mormonism
also shares this concept with Islam. Lastly I will discuss the use of justified deception in a non-religious context by many cultures, including our own." [AUTHOR] -
