Arlyn R. Love considers the position of the First Presidency of the RLDS church with regards to the 1950s and 60s civil rights movement. He posits that the first presidency chose not to support the movement out of fear of disturbing church members. They exercised their role as pastors seeking to maintain the unity of the church rather than as prophets that act to challenge, educate, and lead church members.
