The author "is the son of Dr. Calvin C. Pendleton, a pioneer of 1852, who settled at Parowan, and Mary J. Coombs, a pioneer of 1860. With his mother and step-father, George O. Harroun, he went to [S]ilver Reef in 1878, where he lived thirteen years. Thus he knew the camp in its prime and saw it decline to the vanishing point."
