The author focuses on the many times in Church history when the Lord has asked His Saints to travel across or along or simply to avoid rivers, even when easier ways were sometimes available. In particular, D&C 61 is an example in which the Lord warned against the Saints traveling by river, even though the journey was made more difficult that way. The author discusses the background of the revelation, the Erie Canal system, and the difficulties of that orverland travel.
