D&C 85:7-8 are some of the most difficult verses of revelation to understand. Thus, the author takes care in this article to establish the historical context of the revelation before analyzing the content and then reviewing prophetic interpretations of it. (The revelation was given to Joseph Smith when he wrote a letter to William W. Phelps in Kirtland, Ohio. In general, the section gives direction for those Saints who moved to Zion but for one reason or another had not followed the law of consecration. These Saints did not receive their inheritances in the established order in the Church.)
