"Shortly after the first party of Mormon immigrants arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847, it was decided by the leadership of the LDS Church that the surrounding territory would also be colonized. This was done by companies made up of people who had just arrived from the trip across the plains as well as some who had been in the Salt Lake Valley for a while. The company would, as nearly as possible, include all the trades and handicrafts needed for a successful effort at building a community. This book is an attempt to chronicle them, and their efforts, in carrying out their instructions. It also is a record of their progeny and of their accomplishments." [Author]
