"... This essay will examine plural marriage to hint at the depth and breadth of female religious experiences. Specifically, it will consider three women-Hannah Tapfield King, Edith Turpin McMurrin, and Martha Cragun Cox-Whose personal Writings desmontrate that Mormon women's agency has been too simplistically conceived. Plural wives did not simply define themselves as in relation to the practice of polygamy; rather, they saw themselves as converts, as spiritual pilgrims, and as covenant makers and keepers. Their stories reveal how devout women wrestled with, felt devastated by, and also embraced LDS teachings about plural marriage. Grappling with this practice shaped their understandings of personal revelation, salvation, and atonement." [Author]
