This article focuses on how C. R. Savage’s photographs of a mass baptism have been used. It will investigate how the images have been imagined and reimagined and imbued with meaning across time and space. From their inception, it is clear that these images of a meaning- laden event are rich in possible and disparate readings. It was reported that Savage produced a “faithful picture of the scene,” but like all photographs, its meaning has always been dependent on different and shifting contexts. In this sense, the readings of the photographs are not unlike the vague reflections in the water of Brooks Pond. As meanings flicker and fleet, these photographs provide a way of seeing and understanding a rich moment in time that may or may not have much to do with the actual event. [From the text]
