An Ecological Study of L.D.S. Orthodoxy : As Judged by Bishops and by Professed Absence from Forbidden Word of Wisdom Items in 1041 L.D.S. Homes
Brigham Young University
Seven hundred and forty-nine LDS families were interviewed... It was found that the proportion of abstainers from each specified item was uniform in each class regardless of where the respondents came from. For comparison, 205 non-LDS families were also interviewed. Their responses were extremely homogeneous also, but they differed significantly from LDS response.
Although the similarity of response in both phases of the study in most stakes was remarkable, the deviant pattern found in one Salt Lake Stake indicated that ecological conditions were related to LDS orthodoxy even though neither density of LDS population nor distance from Church headquarters proved to be significant factors.
