In the present study an attempt has been made to narrow the problem of science and religion on both sides. From the viewpoint of science we have attempted to stress scientific facts and to bring to bare scientific theory only when facts justify doing so. On the religious side we have confined our discussions exclusively to "Mormonism." It is commonplace in Mormonism to hold that while theories of science may conflict with Mormon doctrine, the facts of science will not do so, at least no when they become fully known and understood, because truths in one field obviously cannot contradict turths in any other field. It is thus a challenge to show that Mormonism is actually consistent with established truths, or facts in science. This is the foremost task of this volume, although it is not a point of emphasis at any particular pint of discussion. On the other hand, we have attempted scrupulously to avoid stretching the canvas to cover apparent conflicts which many of our well-meaning LDS scientists seem prone to do. Rather, we have tried to expose conflicts and weaknesses in correlations when they seem to exist and objective discussion is possible. We have also attempted conciliations, but in doing so we have taken the viewpoint of LDS literalists on the one hand, and physical scientists on the other. [From the Preface]
