Though they may be willing to share the stage, historians are not about to yield it entirely. In his meditation on the differences between historical and social scientific methods, historian Richard Bushman reports being caught somewhat off-guard by the intellectual assumptions of human particularities, while the social scientist strives for the general theory. The two disciplines are not stranded on opposite sides of an unbridgeable chasm, however. Both learn from the insights of the other; historians, Bushman writes, are like "jackals" preying upon the theories of the social scientists when they are useful in making their interpretations. While each scholar will choose his or her own preferred intellectual approach, Bushman argues for methodological diversity and generosity within Mormon studies, all of which will foster greater intellectual expansiveness and creativity.
