Martin Hickman tells the story of his grandfather, Josiah, who enrolled at the University of Michigan. As one of the first Mormons to proceed East for an education, Josiah represented the church's growing integration with Eastern culture as well as the continuing story of Mormon youth maintaining or finding their identity as they become introduced to broader American cutlture. This Historians' Corner piece focuses upon Hickman's participation in an oratory contest. The Spring issue provides the text of the oration.
