In February 1835 the Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon, under the direction of Joseph Smith, named twelve men to comprise this dispensation's first Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Two months later Thomas Marsh, the eldest apostle, became president of that Quorum. During the eighteen months of his presidency, the apostles often were enmeshed in controversy. Ultimately half, including Thomas himself, left the Church. Why did the "first Quorum" experience such difficulties? Was President Marsh's personality and leadership style part of the problem?
