Mary Cooper and James Oakey of Nottingham, England joined the LDS Church in 1850. They took their eight-year-old daughter Sarah to travel to Zion. This article discusses the challenges and trials that Mary, James, and the rest of the saints faced in practicing polygamy. Mary and James' great-grandchild, Carol Lynn Pearson, employs dramatic license to convey how her descendants might have dealt with accepting polygamy under the guidance of Charles C. Rich in the Bear Lake area. According to the historical record, when James came home with his second wife, Mary left and moved to a nearby town.
