Nancy Tate Dredge recounts some key events in the history of the feminist LDS magazine Exponent II. Within the first year of its inception in 1974, Exponent II had about 4,000 subscribers. Although the magazine published different viewpoints on issues such as the Equal Rights Amendment, some church members associated the magazine with second-wave feminism. As an editor, Dredge worked to help Mormon women be comfortable with the "feminist" label while at the same time trying not to alienate conservative readers.
In 1979, Exponent II published a landmark issue highlighting the problem of depression in LDS culture. Throughout the years, the magazine has addressed sensitive topics such as abortion and LGBTQ Mormons. Today, it continues to provide a forum for Mormon women to speak their minds and help others.
