In this paper, R. Dennis Potter attempts to reconstruct Mormon theology as a response to the problem of heterodoxy, or the existence of beliefs that deviate from orthodoxy. Potter examines the role that heterodoxy played in Joseph Smith's experience in searching for which church he should join, arguing that the orthodox LDS solution to this problem is "irrational." Potter then considers alternative approaches proposed by LDS intellectuals, including an a-theological approach which eschews systematic theology, and extra-doctrinal agnosticism which holds that all doctrine that is not part of the basic beliefs of a religion is not part of that religion. Potter notes some of the problems that persist in these cases, and discusses the difference in religious beliefs and practices.
