After the Mormons started practicing polygamy in the 1850s, Congress started introducing legislation aimed at eliminating the practice. The LDS Church abandoned the practice in 1890. The author argues that, if the Supreme Court today were to determine the constitutionality of these laws, it would conclude that they violate the Free Exercise Clause of the U.S. Constitution because they targeted the LDS Church.
