In the following essay, Marvin Hill agrees to some extent with Klaus Hansen's Quest for Empire: The Political Kingdom of God and the Council of Fifty in Mormon History (East Lansing: Michigan State University Press, 1967) that the Mormons wanted a theocratic kingdom. Significantly, however, Hill distinguishes his views from Hansen's by arguing, "They were content like their prophet to await divine intervention to gain dominion." In Hill's view, the Mormons did not intend to establish a theocratic kingdom on the earth, but to await Christ's return to allow Him to establish His kingdom. [Thomas G. Alexander's summary]
