Motivations Beyond the Manifesto : Post-Manifesto Polygamy, 1890-1904.
Utah Valley University
This paper deals with the issue of polygamy among leaders and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints between 1890 and 1904. The 1890 Woodruff Manifesto, issued by then Church President Wilford Woodruff, stated that the practice of polygamy within the LDS Church was officially ended. But between then and 1904, there were approximately 250 special cases of plural marriage that took place, including some by LDS Church apostles. This paper, looking at a sampling of the plural marriages from this period, attempts to analyze the motivations behind the issuance of the Woodruff Manifesto as well as those behind the new polygamous unions solemnized during those years.
