The symbols used by Woodruff consist of two primary categories, common or frequently drawn symbols and unique or very infrequently used symbols. The common symbols are a group of eighteen symbols that are repeated frequently throughout the journals and constitute a majority of the symbols drawn. Along with these commonly used symbols, Woodruff draws nearly 1,000 unique symbols that appear only once or very infrequently.
The use of symbols throughout the Wilford Woodruff journals provide a valuable insight into who Wilford Woodruff was and what he believed to be the most important recorded events in his nearly 7,000 page diary. Seeking to understand the context in which these symbols are drawn along with providing an interpretation of each symbols meaning and attempting to decipher what each symbol is a representation of can provide a greater insight into this most magnificent record of nineteenth century Mormonism and its author.
