The Southern Utah Mission, centered in St. George, was a result of planned expansion that was undertaken for political and geographical reasons to occupy all the desirable sites beyond the rim of the Great Basin. The settlers and the communities were to help in providing safety, security, and self-sufficiency. Self-sufficiency was never fully realized, by despite the ultimate failure of the cotton industry, the Mission was a success in all other ways and perhaps most particularly in turning out Saints.
