In 1835, Joseph Smith began working on the translation of some writings of Abraham, a project which would become the Book of Abraham. Smith was also involved in another Egyptian project around this time, which produced documents on the Egyptian alphabet and grammar. This chapter examines possible connections between these two projects, and relates this to the "Egyptomania" of the early 1800s.
