In addition to state agencies and railroads, a wide variety of private, corporate, and not-for-profit philanthropic organizations encourage the immigration of various ethnic and religious groups to the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The most active of these organizations focused on relocating Mormon converts from Great Britain and Scandinavia to Utah and settling Russian Jewish immigrants in rural areas.
