"Thomas Gates, twice appointed superintendent of the old West's most notorious prison - YUMA TERRITORIAL PRISON, piloted that institution during the years 1886 through 1888 and 1893 through 1896. Thomas Gates staunchly believed that convicts could be rehabilitated if given a ladder to climb out of the cells of Hellhole and given an opportunity to become self-supporting. That ladder provided a curriculum which included vocational training, spiritual uplifting, social re-structuring, and academic opportunities. Because this extraordinary man had no issue, his contributions to the history of the territorial period have been large neglected or misrepresented. In fact, they were of great importance during the development era and helped to forge the Arizona of today." [Author]
