This thesis analyzes current economic statistics that measure financial health in the United States, identifies a variety of the costs to society that come from financial illiteracy, and presents seven Family Home Evening lessons that will help families to make better financial decisions. Current economic data suggests that individuals and families are making risky financial decisions. Data also suggests that financial literacy in the United States is decreasing. The lack of financial literacy and subsequent poor financial decisions are costly to society. The second part of the thesis identifies some of the ways that society as a whole pays for choices made by financial illiterate individuals. The third part of the thesis contains Family Home Evening lessons that are designed to help families incorporate the counsel and direction that the prophets have given concerning finances. These lessons are based on principles that are applicable regardless of the level of income or economic status. These lessons do not provide specifics on investing vehicles or financial strategies but they do provide a fundamental value system from which families can make decisions.
