In 1995, the LDS Church released "The Family: A Proclamation to the World," which proclaimed that "fathers are to preside over their families" and that "fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners." This emphasis on parental equality is a recent development. Caroline Kline puts this statement in a trend in the past decades of Mormon leaders softening their language regarding male headship. This chapter examines the history of male headship in the LDS Church.
