Among artist C. C. A. Christensen's best-known epic paintings is Crossing the Mississippi on the Ice. Painted soon after 1879, it depicts, on a huge 6'6" × 9'9" panorama panel, a story that was then popular. Christnsen's constant public showings of this scene, and his lecture about, helped spread and entrench four incorrect understandings about the Nauvoo exodus story, misunderstandings embraced by generations after the exodus and perpetuated by historians for more than a century.
