From the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) to Prop 8, the church has opposed what it sees as changes to the institution of marriage whether proposed by feminists or gay activists. In examining its persistent work against same-sex marriage legalization we see the central place of the LDS Church in one of the religious right's most important political contests, even as the church's shifting stances on homosexuality and gay rights complicates our understanding of Mormonism's relationship to modern American conservatism.
