In sharp contrast to the large number of baptisms for the dead performed in Nauvoo between 1841 and 1845 was their virtual disappearance among the Latter-day Saints between 1846 and 1867. Save for Wilford Woodruff's performing this ordinance for a handful of people at Winter Quarters, one other in City Creek in August 1855, two in 1857, and a handful in 1865 and 1866, this ordinance was not on the Mormon celestial radar scope until 1867.
