The purpose of this study was to investigate the barriers and benefits associated with development of an online seminary class for Latter-day Saint (LDS) youth ages 14-18. This first-ever, full-feature seminary site was a pilot effort to determine the effectiveness of online seminary concerning student preferences, individual participation, and course completion rates. Thirteen teachers and twenty-three students from the U.S. northwest and Alberta, Canada areas participated in this four-month study. Preliminary enrollment challenges along with subsequent efforts to engage teachers and students despite cultural, historical, or technological barriers comprise key elements of this study. Summary findings suggest that students and teachers enjoy the flexibility of this approach but struggle to overcome barriers associated with traditional home-study seminary.
