On September 1, 1842, Joseph Smith wrote a letter concerning baptisms for the dead "to all the saints in Nauvoo." Two days later he wrote another letter with instructions for this practice. These letters, now canonized as Doctrine and Covenants sections 127 and 128, often downplay the dangerous situation Smith was facing at this time. This article attempts to tell the larger story behind these sections as Smith went into and out of hiding.
