The construction of a church building in a country is one of the hallmarks of the Church's permanence in that geographic location. For the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints living in Taiwan, this feeling of stability came on October 16, 1966, when Elder Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the island's first chapel (located in Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan). This dedication, approximately ten years after LDS missionaries first initiated proselyting on the island, was a watershed event. It was the first Latter-day Saint chapel built anywhere in the Chinese realm and is one of the earliest church-owned buildings in all of Asia. Because, in the words of a church member in Taiwan written in 1966, "To an extent we measure a church by its buildings," the construction of Taiwan's first chapel was a vital part of the growth of the church on this island.
