[This] article presents a life sketch of Luana Hart Beebe, a curiously uncommon early Latter-day Saint. Luana receives slight mention in the substantial literature on two of her illustrious husbands, Porter Rockwell and Alpheus Cutler. The lack of careful, systematic attention to her life has resulted in factual mistakes, inaccuracies, and undue speculation, even in otherwise sound commentaries. Luana's story merits serious scholarly attention in its own right. She contributed in unacknowledged ways, alongside the more celebrated men in her life, to important events in early Mormonism - events in which all of them played formative roles. Regrettably, Luana left no personal diary, and most of the information about her is in connection with husbands, children, and notable Latter-day Saint activities. Even so, we have pieced together a biographical narrative organized around Luana's kinship relationships and religious activities as an early Mormon convert, a Cutlerite affiliate, a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a resident of Mormon Utah. In sketching her story, we aim to rectify previous errors, oversights, and misinterpretations as well as secure an appropriate place for this remarkable woman in the scholarship on the Latter-day Saints.
