In 1852, Edward Stevenson and Nathan Porter were called as Latter-day Saint missionaries to preach the gospel in Gibraltar, a British overseas territory. The men arrived in 1853 and Porter was soon forced to leave, but Stevenson, having been born in Gibraltar, was allowed to stay. He served as a lone missionary and suffered heavy persecution, partly because of opposition to the Church’s practice of polygamy. A few members of the British military stationed at Gibraltar joined the Church and formed a small branch, but when the Crimean War began and troops were shipped out, Stevenson ended his mission. In 1885, he wrote a series of articles about his experiences in Gibraltar that was published in the Juvenile Instructor, a Latter-day Saint publication.
