In this paper I will consider, in the context of two different traditions, the possibility that salvation could be universal. I will first look at the work of two influential twentieth-century Roman Catholic theologians, Karl Rahner and Hans Urs von Balthasar. Though the two disagree on a number of theological issues, their approaches to the question of universal salvation are in many respects strikingly similar, and both hold out hope for an empty hell. I will explore selected themes in their work, and then consider possible applications of these themes in the context of Latter-day Saint scripture and thought. [Author's abstract]
