The article discusses the arrest and incarceration of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) founder Joseph Smith in Richmond, Missouri, in November 1838. The article discusses hostilities between Mormon and Missouri settlers in several Missouri counties and the decision by then-Missouri governor Lilburn W. Boggs to authorize a state militia in order to subdue Mormons and order them to leave the state.
