In this chapter, Felipe Chou provides historical, political, and religious background on the state of Taiwan in the 1970s. In 1971, the Taiwan Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was created. The Taiwan Mission grew and flourished despite political changes related to the People's Republic of China. The CES established Institute programs throughout Taiwan in 1973. The effects of the Taiwan Mission and the CES programs can continue to be seen in the lives of strong members of the Church today.
