"Mitt Romney's defeat in the 2012 presidential election brought to an end, at least tentatively, a long period of intense media scrutiny of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of which Romney was a life-long member and a lay congregational leader. Much of this scrutiny was premised upon the oddness or "outsiderness" of the Mormon faith in America, and it generated some real anxiety among many members of the church: namely, over how, in response to such attention, to make sense of - or how to defend, or how to transcend - Mormonism's apparent separateness from the dominant religious presumptions and expectations at work in American political discourse. While various historical, social, and cultural factors can help explain that anxiety, one factor that should not be ignored, and which this chapter aims to explore, is the political (or perhaps more accurately, the rhetorical) consequences of Mormon theology."
