In this chapter, the author explores twentieth-century Mormonism and how its intellectual ideals and organizational culture reflected a fruitful marriage between nineteenth-century Mormon theology and the progressive movement of the early twentieth century.
"In that era the phrase 'eternal progression' moved to the center of the Mormon lexicon. It encapsulates in two words a theology about humanity's destiny, defined as a process of development and change over time, the slow tempering of the soul toward divinity through the long effort of a lifetime, and perhaps after. These ideas had deep roots in Mormon history, but the encounter with the American progressive movement revitalized them." [From the text]
