In this chapter, the author explores similarities and differences between Nephite (from the Book of Mormon) and traditional Maya ritual specialists. He explores the ways that Nephite religious practices may have been influenced by other native cultures around them. The main difference lay in the fact that the Nephites understood that the power to do things - fasting and praying, offering sacrifices, and looking to the ritual specialist for rain - came from God rather than the local pantheon.
