Josephine Spencer published "To Keep" in 1910, a story that fits into the Home Literature movement. Turley describes it as "simple and didactic, with stereotypical characters acting to underscore obvious religious themes." In 1928 Spencer published "Little Mother", a story which Turley describes as a rewrite of "To Keep" with "complex characters, intricate relationships, biting dialogue, and understated themes." Turley compares the themes in these two works and notes Spencer's evolving feminism.
