The article discusses two Wold War II incidents which occurred in 1943 in Wayne County, Utah. On January 25, engine problems forced a B-17 "Flying Fortress" to make an emergency landing in a pasture outside of Lyman. Local residents entertained the airplane's crew and the local schools were given time off to watch the airplane take off several days later after it was repaired. On July 14, a Lockheed AT-18A crashed, but the wreckage was discovered in October in an area referred to as the Middle Desert. U.S. Army Air Corps Major LeRoy Gray Heston was dispatched to the area to recover the plane's wreckage and the crew's remains.
