May 7, 1847 to August 4, 1847. Empey crosses the Plains in the Brigham Young's first company, noting distance traveled, the weather, landmarks passed, buffalo herds, and sermons including Brigham Young's on excessive hunting and camp behavior. Empey ferries the Mormon company across Platte River, and is among those chosen to stay behind and earn money ferrying non-Mormon emigrants across. He includes the instructions given to those left behind. Most of his entries record the names, number, and method of payment of his customers. Empey meets returning members of the Mormon Battalion, and learns of the Donner Party's fate from them.
