In the 5th century, the British philosopher Pelagius invited controversy during his time by suggesting that humans were responsible for their personal salvation. In the 19th century, the American religious leader Joseph Smith invited similar controversy by claiming that God gave humans free will and individual agency to assist them in their quest for salvation. In this paper, Rasmuson compares and contrasts these two leaders' teachings.
