On October 21, 1872, the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints incorporated in Plano, Illinois. Its new leader, Joseph Smith III, had come of age and the group that coalesced around him sought an identity of its own. As was customary, the state required the creation of a corporate seal that could be used for official documents. The first seal has never before been published, and the inspiration for its design has been largely misunderstood. recent research has uncovered its true origins and ties to the history of the restored church both in America and abroad.
